16 new coronavirus infections confirmed in Soite’s area — one of the earlier infections confirmed to be the Indian variant of the coronavirus

Sixteen new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Soite’s area. The cases are part of the same extensive chain of infections we have informed about during the last few days and which started at a first of May brunch. The chain of infections has led to several further chains of infection, the most extensive of which is one that started from an exposure situation at Kokkolan ammattikampus (Kokkola vocational school).

The virus has been spreading quickly in the area as the circumstances have been favourable due to two exposure situations. In total, 41 coronavirus infections have been confirmed as part of the chain of infections that started from the first May brunch. Circa 300 people have been quarantined. The incidence of infections in the region during the last 14 days has quickly risen to over 50/100,000 citizens

Samples from the chain of infections have been sent for analysis in order to find possible virus mutations. The sequencing result of one sample has been confirmed as the Indian variant of the coronavirus. Read more about the Indian variant in THL’s message (in Finnish).

At present, the infections are spreading in Soite’s area especially among young people and young adults, some of whom have very mild symptoms. No patients are currently being treated for COVID-19 at the Central Ostrobothnia Central Hospital.

The same coronavirus guidelines for infection prevention also apply regarding virus mutations:

  • reduce the number of close contact to a minimum - i.e. avoid all unnecessary social gatherings!
  • be sure to use a face mask carefully
  • keep a safety distance of 2 meters to other people
  • maintain good hand hygiene
  • follow the regional regulations and recommendations

The following places have been added to the list of possible situations of exposure:
