The Authority Task Group Suggests Stricter Regional Restrictions on Gatherings – the Number of Coronavirus Cases is Increasing Quickly in Soite’s Area

The Central Ostrobothnian regional COVID-19 authority task group gathered on Wednesday 5th of January 2022 to assess the regional coronavirus situation and recommendations. Due to the omicron variant of the coronavirus, the number of coronavirus infections is quickly increasing in the Soite area. The group of authorities suggests that the Regional State Administrative Agency limits the number of participants at public events and public gatherings indoors to 10 persons and that section 58 d of the Communicable Diseases Act be applied to Soite’s area. The regional face mask recommendation was expanded to include primary schools in the area from fifth grade up.

The incidence of coronavirus continues to increase quickly in Soite’s area. The incidence of infections during 14 days is currently 459/100,000 residents in the entire Soite area and the incidence during 14 days is 355. Just yesterday, 59 new infections were confirmed in Soite’s area. Last week a total of 1,800 coronavirus tests were taken, of which 11.4 percent were positive. Three COVID-19 patients are currently being treated at Central Ostrobothnia central hospital. There are currently no coronavirus patients in intensive care.

Last week, only 41% of infections were confirmed in persons already in quarantine. Still, 82 percent of the infections have been traced. However, the number of coronavirus infections is increasing so quickly that Soite has to prioritize infection tracking and because of this, persons who have received a positive coronavirus test result can no longer be called individually. Persons who have been infected will receive a text message that provides short instructions for how to act and instructions for when to contact Soite. Additional information in the message published on January 4th 2022.

Infections are spreading particularly among children, young people and young adults. The majority of infections was confirmed among persons younger than 20 years and persons in the age group 20 to 29. Only 12 percent of the infections were confirmed in persons aged 60 and older. Regarding the coronavirus statistics, the majority of infections with the omicron variant of the coronavirus has been confirmed in persons who are vaccinated. Although the number of infections has increased, the need for hospital care has not increased in the area. It is especially important to take the coronavirus vaccine now that the quickly spreading omicron variant is present in the area, as the vaccine protects you from serious forms of coronavirus disease in particular.

Soite’s area is still being classified as an area with community transmission. The regional recommendations remain largely unchanged, but the regional face mask recommendation was expanded to include primary schools from fifth grade up. A recommendation about remote work is in effect in the area until 31st of January 2022.

The group of authorities suggests that the Regional State Administrative Agency of Western and Inland Finland should re-evaluate the restrictions concerning public events and public gatherings so that for one month, the number of participants allowed at gatherings in the area would be limited to 10 persons. The current restriction issued by the Regional State Administrative Agency of Western and Inland Finland limits the number of participants at indoor public events and public gatherings to 20. The restriction is in effect until the 30th of January 2022. The group of authorities also suggests that section 58 d of the Communicable Diseases Act should be applied to Soite’s area. The proposal will be reviewed by the Agency, which will make a decision regarding it.

Current regulations and recommendations regarding the coronavirus epidemic within Soite’s area are listed on Soite’s corona website: https://korona.soite.fi/en/recommendations/

The authority task group would like to remind everyone that you should not leave your home if you have even only mild symptoms of a respiratory infection. Especially those who have not been vaccinated or who have received only one dose of the vaccine should seek out coronavirus testing without delay and even if they have only very mild symptoms of a respiratory infection.

We strongly recommend that you get fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, as the coronavirus is not going away and it will be very difficult to avoid the disease in the future. It is significantly safer to encounter the coronavirus if you are vaccinated. Vaccinations give an effective protection against severe forms of coronavirus disease.

Coronavirus vaccinations with a third dose have been off to a good start in the Soite area. Vaccinations are mainly done during walk-in vaccination days without appointment booking, which means you can come to a coronavirus vaccination when it suits you best. The timetable for vaccinations can be found on Soite’s coronavirus website: https://korona.soite.fi/en/the-coronavirus-vaccines/

The regional COVID-19 authority task group will hold its next meeting on Wednesday 12th of January 2022 to assess the regional coronavirus situation and recommendations. If there are changes in the regional coronavirus situation, the authority task group will convene if necessary. The authority task group consists of experts from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), the Regional State Administrative Agency (AVI), Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY) and Soite.
